I have combination skin, which is dry on the cheeks and oily on the T zone (forehead, nose, chin). In Summer, it gets greasy easily, and in Winter, it is often dry and sensitive under heating. Finding the right light-weight moisturizer has always been the mission in my skincare journey, as using rich moisturizers can worsen congestion of pores and lead to increased oil production that may exacerbate acne breakouts.
There are 3 types of light-weight moisturizers I use on rotation: Clarins Extra-Firming Jour Day Cream, SKII Cellumination Deep Surge EX Moisturizer, and Kiehl’s Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream. Out of the 3, I strongly recommend Kiehl’s as the best value for investment, especially if you are choosing a moisturizer to use under the tropical weather – it seems to be warm year round without season, yet our skin still has its own seasons, skin care can be a trickier task.
About Calendula – the flower is named due to its tendency to bloom with the calendar, usually once a month or with every new moon. American physicians used calendula to treat amenorrhea, conjunctivitis, fevers, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and burns, as well as minor infections of the skin. Calendula flowers are also used to disinfect minor wounds because of its antibacterial properties.
From the Chinese medicine point of view, Calendula is “neutral” and often being used in treatments, skin conditions are related to “pathologies involving the liver and the lung”. Skin conditions in the summer arise from invasion of “wind heat” to the skin that causes “stagnation of blood”. Calendula removes the stagnation, allowing the blood to nourish the skin.
The water cream is actually not in a cream texture, it is more of a jelly-like serum-infused gel-lotion, ultra smooth, super light-weight, yet not sticky. Once massaging into the skin, the texture starts to feel like water, with a burst of freshness, and absorbs immediately as though there is nothing there, leaving skin feeling soothing, radiant, and hydrated. The water cream is gentle on the skin, with a natural herbal smell. If using it as a primer or make up based, foundation can last for hours.
On top of hydration and anti-inflammation, Calendula flower extract also helps to improve uneven texture and reduces redness if used for long term.
